On February 26th, students at our school experienced an exciting and educational assembly titled Storm Science Presents: Weather Wonders – Discovering the Sky’s Secrets. Hosted by the PTA, the assembly took students on a thrilling journey through the world of tornadoes and lightning. With hands-on demonstrations, engaging videos, and fascinating facts, the event kept everyone on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
The assembly kicked off with an intense focus on tornadoes, one of nature’s most powerful and awe-inspiring phenomena. The presenter from the Storm Science team introduced the different types of tornadoes, explaining how they are classified from the weakest F0 to the most destructive F5. Using a variety of videos, students watched real tornadoes in action, learning about the damage they cause and the science behind their formation.
One of the highlights of the assembly was a live demonstration in the presenter created a mini tornado inside a large tank. As the air swirled and formed a visible vortex, the students gasped in awe, captivatedby the sight of a tornado up close. The presenter also discussed the causes and effects of tornadoes, explaining how these storms develop and how scientists use technology to predict their paths and keep people safe.
Next, the focus shifted to lightning—another spectacular and dangerous weather phenomenon. The presenter demonstrated how lightning forms through a series of interactive videos and a cool hands-on experiment. Using a special contraption, he showed how electrical charges build up in storm clouds and discharge in the form of a lightning strike. The students were absolutely.
The safety of lightning was also a key part of the presentation. Essential tips for staying safe during a lightning storm were shared. Students learned that understanding the risks of lightning is just as important as knowing how to protect themselves when storms roll in.
The entire assembly was filled with excitement and learning. Students eagerly participated, asking questions and volunteering for interactive demonstrations. Thanks to the hands-on experiments and stunning video footage, they gained a deeper understanding of how tornadoes and lightning form, as well as the important safety measures to take during these events.
As the assembly came to a close, students were reminded that while tornadoes and lightning are dangerous, knowledge is key to staying safe. He encouraged them to continue learning about the weather and to always be prepared for storms.
A huge thank you to our PTA for organizing such a fun and educational event, and to the Storm Science team for delivering a fascinating and memorable experience. The students left the assembly inspired, with a new appreciation for the sky’s secrets and how science helps us understand the weather that shapes our world.
